St. John’s School Celebrates India’s 79th Independence Day
St. John’s School marked the 79th Independence Day of India with a fortnight-long, three-phase celebration beginning on 2 August.
Phase I opened with a flurry of activities: walls and display boards were adorned with Tirangas, and Tiranga Vandan (Tribute to the Tricolour) was conducted. Students brimmed with patriotism, and the campus soon wore a festive look.
Phase II enthralled the school with hands-on events that engaged every learner—tri-colour badge-making and flag-making sessions filled the corridors with creativity. By the end of the week, the entire premises were awash in the Tricolour.
Phase III began with a Special Assembly led by students, celebrating the spirit and legacy of Independence Day. “On the morning of 15 August, the grand culmination—organised by students of Classes XI-B and XI-C—began with a Special celebration of Independence Day. The Chief Guest, Colonel Vijayant Kumar, Vir Chakra (Retd.), was accorded a Guard of Honour by the students. He hoisted the National Flag and presided over the programme, which opened with a curtain-raiser and welcome address by the Deputy Head Boy, Abhishek Kumar Patel. Patriotic dances and songs followed, and a thoughtfully staged skit left the audience reflecting on their duties towards the nation.
In his address, the Chief Guest Col. Vijayant Kumar, VrC (Retd.), born 1963, studied at St Peter’s College and Agra College, joined IMA Dehradun, and was commissioned into 2 Dogra on 9 June 1984. Posted to Siachen in 1989, he led Operation IBEX, repelled an assault, suffered frostbite, later instructed at IMA, commanded 6 Dogra, retired 2007, worked till 2019; blessed the students with practical counsel: read books, value time, be presentable, and remain respectful to the Nation and its people. As a token of gratitude, Principal Ms. Reeja Ninan felicitated Colonel Vijayant Kumar. The ceremony concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Cultural Secretary, Charvee Tripathi, and resounded with the rousing slogans: “Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”
