MYSTIC STRINGS OF THE EAST: ESRAJ IN HARMONY | MUSICAL CONCERT

St. John’s School, GNW, hosted a captivating musical event titled “Mystic Strings of the East: Esraj in Harmony” on 25 April 2025. The event aimed to foster a deep connection between students and the enriching world of music. It featured two emerging, exceptional artists whose musical journeys are as inspiring as their soulful performances.

The first artist was Ms. Shih-Ting Lin, a Mandarin Language Teacher at the Department of International Relations and Governance Studies, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence. Originally from Taiwan and now based in India, Ms. Lin holds a profound reverence for Indian classical music. She plays the Esraj, a bowed string instrument known for its meditative and introspective sound. Having trained under a teacher from Santiniketan, she shares a deep bond with Rabindra Sangeet. For Ms. Lin, music transcends performance and it is a path of devotion and inner reflection.

The second artist was Mr. Chaitanya, an accomplished tabla player who began his musical journey at the tender age of six. He initially trained under Shri Gitaram Ji and is currently under the guidance of Ustad Akram Khan Ji, a maestro of the Ajrada Gharana. A graduate in Music from Hindu College, Delhi University, Mr. Chaitanya has won numerous competitions, including the Open Youth Competition organized by the Government of Haryana, and has performed alongside celebrated artists both in India and abroad.

As the event unfolded, students were transported into a mesmerizing world of music through the soul-stirring notes of the Esraj, beautifully intertwined with the rhythmic beats of the Tabla. The atmosphere was electric, with overwhelming applause and admiration filling the auditorium after each performance.

The event succeeded brilliantly in its mission to build a deep rapport between the students and the universal treasures of music, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to witness “Mystic Strings of the East: Esraj in Harmony.”

The musical evening concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks to the artists for their transcendental performances. St. John’s School, GNW’s musical event was a glowing testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries, connect hearts, and enrich lives — a day of pure musical bliss that will be remembered and cherished by all.
